PRINCE2 stands for PRojects IN Controlled Environments version 2. It is a project management methodology that was developed in the UK by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) and the method itself is in the public domain. It was initially developed in 1989, and went through several revisions and changes until in 2009 it was launched as “PRINCE2:2009 Refresh”. While initially the principles and processes were developed as a standard for information systems (IT) project management, today this project methodology is widely applied outside that domain. It is very popular in the UK, as well as around the world. PRINCE2 project management methodology complements and integrates with other methods such as ITIL, P3O, P3M3, MSP, and M_o_R. The manual used for PRINCE2 methodology is called “Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 – 2009 Edition”.
Training, Accreditation, and Exams
While you do not have to receive training in order to sit the exam, it is highly recommended if you wish to pass the PRINCE2 exam. There is no official free PRINCE2 online training available. You could take online PRINCE2 training at your own pace, or prefer to attend a PRINCE2 training course with an accredited trainer in a class in your area by accredited PRINCE2 training providers and their affiliates. There are two certification levels for PRINCE2 – Foundation, and Practitioner. You may study for them separately, or decide to take both levels in sequence (which is what many students do). In order to get certified, you must pass an examination. There are mock exams and you can look at past papers during the course, so you can practice similar questions and be better prepared. After all, there is a cost to this exam, so it’s best to pass it on the first time. Below is some more information on the PRINCE2 training and certification.
The PRINCE2 Foundation training provides you with the required knowledge and understanding of the PRINCE2 method. With this certification, you will be able to work effectively as a member of a project management team that adopts PRINCE2. By passing the Foundation exam, you should understand the key terminology and structure of PRINCE2, including:
- Basic Project Management characteristics and context
- The PRINCE2 principles
- The objectives of the PRINCE2 processes.
- The benefits of adopting PRINCE2
- Roles in PRINCE2 roles
The PRINCE2 Foundation exam includes 75 multiple choice questions, and takes 1 hour. To pass you will need to answer at least 50% of the questions correctly. The Foundation qualification is also a pre-requisite for the Practitioner qualification.
The highly prestigious and sought-after PRINCE2 Practitioner certification will teach you how to apply and tailor PRINCE2 in a real project situation. Training is quite demanding, and you will need to work hard for this certification. The PRINCE2 Practitioner training will include:
- Principles of tailoring PRINCE2 to the Project Environment
- in depth look at the 7 PRINCE2 Principles, Processes, and Themes
- Preparation for the exam
- Real life case studies analysis
The PRINCE2 Practitioner exam includes 8 questions with multiple choice sub-questions, and lasts two and a half hours. During the test, you may use the PRINCE2 manual: ‘Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2’ during the test. A pass mark is given for those who answered 55% (44 mark) correctly.
